Sliding doors where a swing door doesn't belong.

Barn doors work when you need a visual statement in a space that can't swing a traditional door, or when you want the door itself to carry some weight in the room. They slide rather than swing, so they save floor space and handle wide openings that would look awkward with a double door. The hardware is visible, which means it either adds to the design or fights it. There is no middle ground.

The track has to be mounted to solid structure, the door needs clearance on the wall it slides against, and the gap between door and frame means they don't seal sound or light the way a hinged door does. Barn doors are a design choice with functional trade-offs. If the room can handle those trade-offs and the look fits what you're building, they work. If not, they read like a trend that landed in the wrong house.
